City buys machine, sprays for mosquitos

Jun 13, 2023Jun 13, 2023

Matters pertaining to the public works department kept the Belmond City Council busy Monday night.

  The council approved the purchase of a new vacuum trailer for $66,500. Public Works Director Justin Fournier said, "This will become one of our most used pieces of equipment. Almost every city has one."

  Using pressurized water and vacuum action, the new machine can clean sewers and manholes, open clogged storm drains, clean swimming pool and sewer plant pits, and empty water-filled ditches. Currently, the city has to borrow equipment or hire some of these services done by outsiders. Fournier believes the cost of the machine will be recovered in less than a year.

  The purchase will be made from the city's equipment fund, which currently has a balance of $99,500. The machine will be delivered in the fall.

  Fournier also reported that

  —the flushing of sewer mains and fire hydrants has been completed;

  —three water leaks have been discovered. One was fixed Monday. Two others may be done this week. One may involve closing a street near the school;

  —the first mosquito spraying of the season is scheduled for June 7.... Read the entire story in the Belmond Independent.
