"The Psychopomp Machine": Marvel's New Doomsday Weapon Makes the Infinity Stones Look Weak

Jul 17, 2023Jul 17, 2023

The Infinity Stones are among the most powerful objects in the Marvel Universe, but now a new weapon makes them look like child's play.

Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Clobberin' Time #5!Marvel's new doomsday weapon, the "Psychopomp Machine," stands to make the Infinity Stones look weak. The Infinity Stones are arguably the most powerful objects in the Marvel Universe, capable of bending time and space to the user's will. Now, in a first look at Clobberin’ Time #5, Marvel unveils its latest super-weapon. The horrifying Psychopomp Machine harnesses powers the Infinity Stones can only dream about.

As reported on League of Comic Geeks, the Psychopomp Machine will make its debut in July's Clobberin’ Time #5, written and drawn by Steve Skroce. Clobberin’ Time follows the Thing's exploits as he teams up with various heroes from around the Marvel Universe. The stories thus far have been building to the Psychopomp Machine, as well as Ogdu Fraize, the villain who seeks to wield it. The solicitation reveals that the Psychopomp Machine can harness the very energy of creation; Ogdu intends to steal the energies of the Big Bang–as well as the energies of the newborn Galactus and the Sentience of the Universe. With these powers, Ogdu can remake the universe in his image, and it falls on the Thing and Doctor Doom to stop him.

The Marvel Universe is full of many powerful objects and devices, such as the Ultimate Nullifier and the Cosmic Cube–yet the Infinity Stones stand head and shoulders above the rest. The Stones once belonged to individual members of the Elders of the Universe, but through trickery and cunning, Thanos was able to steal them all, which he then used to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos then used it to snuff out half of the universe's population. After Thanos’ defeat, the Stones have changed owners on several occasions; for example, Captain America recently reassembled the Gauntlet and used it to move a universe during Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run. There is seemingly no limit to the Infinity Stones' power–but now this new device has arrived and makes the Stones look downright pathetic.

The Psychopomp Machine differs from the Infinity Stones in one crucial aspect that signifies its true power. Whereas the Infinity Stones draw on the energies of the universe, such as time, space, the soul, etc., the Psychopomp Machine draws on the energies that created the universe–a force far more powerful than that used by the Infinity Stones. In the hands of a villain like Ogdu Fraize, this weapon's potential for evil is great.

What makes the Psychopomp Machine truly terrifying–and powerful, is it draws on energies far beyond the Infinity Stones; the Machine's source of power helped create the Stones. League of Comic Geeks’ solicitation states that Ogdu is going to use it to remake the universe. Ogdu is a minor villain, which leads to the question: what if other villains got their hands on it? What could such a device do in the hands of someone like Thanos? Or Doctor Doom? The Psychopomp Machine's potential as Marvel's new doomsday weapon is great, making the Infinity Stones look weak.
