{KXLG – Watertown, SD} At the recent Codington County Commissioners meeting, the board approved two significant equipment purchases for the Highway Department, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and addressing safety concerns.

Interim Highway Superintendent Lynn Solberg presented two quotes for a new hot tack sprayer (oil pot), a critical piece of equipment used for road patching in the spring. The quotes were:

Solberg recommended the more cost-effective option from Midstates Equipment and Supply, which would replace the department's current 1951 model. He noted that the new equipment was essential, as discussed in recent safety meetings. Commissioner Gabel moved to approve the purchase, and Commissioner VanDusen seconded the motion. The board unanimously approved the $43,750.00 purchase, ensuring the department is prepared for future road maintenance.

The board also approved the purchase of a Kubota S series skid steer loader, equipped with a forklift and snowblower, from Eastside Equipment for $63,144.16. Solberg presented three quotes for consideration:

Solberg emphasized the necessity of the snowblower attachment for clearing snow from bridge decks that motor graders and trucks cannot cross. He added that the skid steer would also address safety concerns raised in meetings. Commissioner Johnson moved to approve the Kubota skid steer purchase, with Commissioner VanDusen seconding. The motion was unanimously carried.

Both equipment purchases reflect the board's commitment to maintaining and improving county infrastructure while ensuring the safety and efficiency of the Highway Department's operations.
